This decision sparked a significant debate regarding the replacement of the Union Flag. After considering three options, the design featuring a maple leaf by George Stanley, inspired by the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada, was chosen. On February 15, 1965, the flag made its inaugural appearance, and this date is now commemorated annually as National Flag of Canada Day.
